Aigio, the capital of Aegialia
Aigio has the charm of a small town with a rich history but also a mood for modern life.
Built amphitheatrically on three levels with magnificent views of the Corinthian Gulf, it still retains characteristic elements that testify to its rich history. Its coastal zone with the port and the stone buildings, typical handicraft architecture of the last century that are today renovated, host mainly cultural and recreational activities, creating an area that is full of life throughout the year. There are important sights for visitors, such as the famous church of Panagia Tripiti, the square with the plane tree which is said to date from the time of the traveler Pausanias, the twelve fountains, but also the habitat of Alyki which is an important station for many migratory bird species. The connection with the upper city, with its historical and commercial center consists of cobbled streets and stairs, choosing either the well-known stairs Philopimenos or the picturesque steps that follow the rock and reach the beautiful square, Psila Alonia. Aigio has a rich cultural heritage such as the Archaeological Museum which exhibits remarkable findings from excavations made in the area of Aegialia, Folklore Museum, Ecclesiastical Museum, but also historic neoclassical buildings.
